Regular cleaning to remove limescale, proper use, and storage are key to ensuring the long-term, efficient operation of your garment steamer. With proper maintenance, a garment steamer can easily last for many years.
Daily Usage Precautions
- Use purified or distilled water: Minerals in tap water easily form limescale, clogging the heating element and steam vents. It is recommended to use purified water first, especially in areas with hard water.
- Preheat thoroughly before use: After plugging in, wait 1-3 minutes for the water to heat up completely before starting to steam and iron. This avoids insufficient temperature affecting steam output.
- Adjust temperature and steam according to fabric: High temperatures can be used for cotton and linen. For delicate fabrics such as silk and synthetic fibers, it is recommended to lower the steam setting to prevent damage to clothing.
Regular Cleaning and Maintenance (Core!)
Limescale is the number one culprit for a garment steamer's short lifespan. It is recommended to clean it every 10-15 uses or once a month.
1. Water Tank and Internal Descaling:
Mix white vinegar and water in a 1:3 ratio and pour into the water tank.
Run the machine for 5-10 minutes to allow the vinegar to circulate and soften the scale.
After turning off and cooling, discard the waste liquid and rinse 2-3 times with clean water until there is no sour smell.
Alternatively, soaking in citric acid (15g citric acid + 1L water) for 3-4 hours will provide a gentler and more thorough cleaning.
2. Steam Nozzle and Vent Cleaning:
If the steam output is reduced, the nozzle may be clogged.
Gently unclog the steam vents with a fine needle or toothpick, being careful not to use excessive force and damage the vents.
Some users have shared that dripping white vinegar directly into the vent and letting it sit for a moment before turning on the machine can help unclog it.
3. External Cleaning:
After powering off and cooling, wipe the outer casing and iron the panel with a soft, damp cloth.
Avoid using strong acid or alkali cleaners to prevent surface corrosion.
